MY PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS

Another miniature from the Thirty Years' War period and like the Scale 75 Spanish pikeman it is based on the Ferrer Dalmau painting 'The last Tercio'. This time sculptor is Spain's wonderboy Antonio Zapatero who's work is currently booming.

It is a rather straightforward miniature so nothing much to tell there. The quality of the casting and fitting is first rate as can be expected from the Romeo Models company.

Given the historical time frame you have some liberties regarding the colour palette as there were no fixed uniforms as yet. Focal points are the big pistol hanging on the right hip and the typical Spanish parrying dagger with its large, sail shaped guard.

I quite like the determined expression on the face which makes the miniature a credible representation of a veteran swordsman - or 'old soldier' - of the Spanish Tercio infantery formation which also comprised pikemen and arquebusiers or musketeers, all fighting in a mutually supportive role.

Apart from this 'Old soldier', Romeo Models has also these 4 other 75 mm miniatures in its catalogue, all based on the Ferrer-Dalmau painting:

  • an officer of the Tercios, click here
  • a drummer boy, click here
  • a standard bearer, click here
  • a pikeman, click here

All these miniatures combined on a vignette would make for an impressive display covering the Thirty Year's War.
